Why the ‘business case’ for diversity isn’t working

Why the ‘business case’ for diversity isn’t working

we are highly unlikely to see these promised trillions. And, such failures may lead to disillusionment with diversity efforts.

when there are downturns in organizational performance, believers in the business case are more likely to see diversity efforts as ineffective and to support dropping the organization’s investment in diversity programs.

The latest experiments have found that exposure to an organization’s business case for diversity decreased a sense of belonging to that organization for women and for members of the LGBTQ community, which was then associated with lower desire to join and lower performance on the job.

Making the Case for Accessibility

Common excuses:

  • “The legal precedent is fuzzy at best.”
  • “This affects such a small number of our users. Let’s focus on our core demographic.”
  • “It’s just too expensive.” “We’ve got to get this product out there: We’ll work on accessibility in our second release.”
  • “We’re already months (or years) along with a product that was designed and built without accessibility in mind. Now what?”

Open source beyond the market

Open source beyond the market:

This is the snowball effect of finding meaning at work. You don’t just have a fixed pie of productivity to divide amongst your pursuits, be they commercial or open source. The pie expands and shrinks depending on your motivation and your mood. When one area of your life is contracting, it often shrinks all the other areas along with it. And when one part of your life is expanding, others often follow too.
